NYC Beaches on Long Island Sound Receive Mixed Water Quality Grades
US · Published May 20, 2026
A recent report by Save the Sound has revealed significant disparities in water quality among New York City's Long Island Sound beaches.
Eight out of 11 beaches received poor grades (Ds or Fs) for fecal and pollution levels during the 2025 swimming season.
The worst-performing beaches, including White Cross Fishing Club and American Turners, were located near Eastchester Bay, where combined sewer outflows contribute to water contamination.

Why It's Important?

The poor water quality at several NYC beaches poses health risks to swimmers, including exposure to bacteria from untreated sewage, stormwater runoff, and animal waste. Beaches near combined sewer outflows are particularly affected, with contamination levels failing safety standards in nearly 40% of water samples at the worst sites. While some areas, like City Island, benefit from cleaner waters due to less development and local conservation efforts, the overall situation highlights the need for infrastructure improvements to protect public health.
